Year 5 Viking Day 18th November 2016

Year 5 started the week by making Viking costumes. They were split into groups to dye a pillowcase to make a tabard and then had to also make a brooch, a cloak and belt.

On Friday after putting on costumes the children spent the morning making mini models of a longship and also enjoying a workshop where they were able to handle a variety of artefacts such as a sword, shield, chainmail and a helmet. They then had a look at clothing for men and women, and everyone got a chance to have a go at grinding the grain to make flour and the session finished with a story. In the afternoon both classes marched to the Fairland's lakes and had pictures taken beside the longboat.

Thanks to parents for your help and support, we really appreciate it.

Ancient Greek Workshop.

Today we had a visit from Portals to the Past. We spent the day dressed up and Dan Shadrake from Portals to the Past and the Horrible Histories tv series joined us. He showed us maps and taught us about the timeline of Ancient Greece and talked about myths and legends, then he recreated some of them using some very willing volunteers! In the afternoon Agnesi class represented Athens and Teresa class represented Sparta. There was a quiz, a game called Petteia and Archimedes puzzles too. Next we learnt about the Olympics. Finally we got to try on Ancient Greek armour and hats and modern body armour too. Here are lots of photos of our day. Thank you to parents and the children for making such fantastic costumes.
